Beginner Mountain Bike Series 1 – China Camp

Are you newer to mountain biking and not sure which trails to try out?  Have you been on a few rides and want to work on your skills?  Come ride with the Velo Girls on this beginner-friendly mountain bike ride series!

This is the first ride of our weekend “Beginner-Series” for mountain biking.  These rides are perfect for women of all ages who have just a little experience on a mountain bike, but want to explore and learn more about the local single track trail systems.  We will ride at a social pace, regroup often, and even have opportunities to practice skills on some of the mild technical sections.  Unsure of your level?  Check it out here.  NOTE: this ride is for BEGINNER level riders, not for novices.

Velo Girls ride leaders are all experienced mountain bikers who have a love of sharing this sport with newer riders.  Pick up some technical tips and tricks along the ride!

China Camp State Park is a great beginner-friendly trail system.  The majority of the trails are narrow tree covered single track with beginner-level challenges such as tight switch back corners, mild rock gardens and roots, and some short steep sections (both uphill and downhill).

Our preferred route starts with a climb up to the top of the park (Bayview Trail).  We will stop and regroup as often as needed.  Once at the top, the trail meanders through a beautiful forest, popping out at a scenic vista of the San Rafael bridge (Oakridge Trail).  Bring snacks, as this is the ideal location for a break!  The rest of the trail back to the car is mostly downhill with views of San Pablo Bay (Shoreline Trail).

Plan for about 2-2.5 hours and 10 miles total (depending on the group, of course).

BRING a mountain bike (hardtails ok!), helmet, water, and snacks.

DIRECTIONS:  We meet at the kiosk at the entrance to the Back Ranch Meadows camping/parking area.  This is at the intersection of N. San Pedro Road and Back Ranch Meadows Road.

PARKING is free along N. San Pedro Road right outside the park, or pay the fee to park inside the Back Ranch Meadows lot.  There is a TRAIL USE FEE of $3 payable at the entrance.  Yes, you are expected to pay this fee to ride with us.

BATHROOMS and water are located in the Back Ranch Meadows parking lot area.

RAIN cancels the ride – please check back here if that seems likely.

If you’d like to carpool or have any questions, please post in the comments section below.

We look forward to riding with you!
