Are you newer to mountain biking and not sure which trails to try out? Have you been on a few rides and want to work on your skills? Come ride with the Velo Girls on this beginner-friendly mountain bike ride series!
This is the first ride of our weekend “Beginner-Series” for mountain biking. These rides are perfect for women of all ages who have just a little experience on a mountain bike, but want to explore and learn more about the local single track trail systems. We will ride at a social pace, regroup often, and even have opportunities to practice skills on some of the mild technical sections. Unsure of your level? Check it out here. NOTE: this ride is for BEGINNER level riders, not for novices.
Velo Girls ride leaders are all experienced mountain bikers who have a love of sharing this sport with newer riders. Pick up some technical tips and tricks along the ride!
UC Santa Cruz trails are great for beginners who are developing into early-intermediate riders! The majority of the trails are narrow tree covered single track with beginner-appropriate challenges such as switch back corners, roots and log-overs, and some short steep sections (both uphill and downhill).
Our preferred route starts with a gentle climb up the beautiful Emma McCreary Trail. We will stop and regroup as often as needed. We then continue with a bit more of a climb to the top (Pogonip area). And finally, spend some time exploring some of the most fun rolling single track through the redwood maze area before descending back down the way we climbed up – one of the most fun downhill sections in the bay area!
Plan for about 2-2.5 hours ride with about 10-15 miles total (depending on the group, of course).
BRING a mountain bike (hardtails ok!), helmet, water, and snacks.
DIRECTIONS: We meet in the parking lot at the intersection of Hwy 9 (River Street) and Golf Club Drive.
PARKING is plentiful and free in the lot or on the street.
BATHROOMS and water are UNAVAILABLE at the park. Please plan accordingly.
RAIN cancels the ride – please check back here if that seems likely.
If you’d like to carpool or have any questions, please post in the comments section below.
We look forward to riding with you!
